Esta blished t wo years ago, the Redwood Development Center (RDC) is Shanghai’s first bilingual service institution which focuses on the functional capacity development of infants and children (ages 0-18), including motor, intellectual, psychological and social skills. It provides a range of counseling, assessment, support and therapy services.    RDC therapists specialize in the evaluation and treatment of infants and children with a wide variety of diagnoses and impairments, including autism, ADHD, development delay, cerebral palsy, orthopedic injuries, genetic disorders, sensory integration dysfunction among others.   Compared with special education classes provided by schools and psychological counseling on the market which tend to focus on special needs or psychological therapy, RDC believes that a child-centered, interdisciplinary approach can encourage children to reach their highest level of functional capacity in all areas. RDC is committed to combining traditional methods of psychological, occupational, physical and speech therapy and support from school and family to design a functional capacity development plan for each individual case.   For children with development delay or other disorders, RDC provides occupational, physical or speech therapy through highly trained and licensed therapists with interdisciplinary team approach, focusing on different kinds of interaction games between children and therapists in a fun, playful and friendly atmosphere.   RDC is also very open to the community. For parents facing the difficult situation of finding the right way for their child to get therapy or those just wanting to get professional ideas or suggestions on child development stages, RDC provides free counseling either online or face-to-face. For schools which have limited (or lack entirely) special needs and therapy support, and for teachers who just want to know more about special needs therapy, RDC provides free visitation service, as well as basic counseling sessions.   RDC also holds monthly speech or short-term seminar for regular child development. As Bobby Wang, RDC’s Chief Occupational Therapist, points out, “We treat every case with professional therapy, care and passion, we look more upon their life-long development, we regard ourselves as the hope for parents, support for schools and contributor for society.”   As part of its partnership with MSS (Montessori School of Shanghai), RDC has its own indoor therapy and counseling area and shares an outdoor activity area with the school. Besides working directly with MSS, RDC is now working closely with other international schools in Shanghai including Soong Ching Ling Kindergarden and Western International School. RDC also partners with local children hospitals and special education department such as CHS (Children’s hospital of Shanghai) and SCMC (Shanghai Chilren’s Medical Center) on some special cases.   In addition to aiming to be the best full-therapy special education institution in China for early stage development, RDC is planning on opening to adults as well. Within the next several years, we will see another three RDC centers open in Shanghai.
