Later in the day, infection setin, and she sought medical attention. On Wednesday, Smith said, thecat was still hanging around the woman's house and attacked a 4-monthold puppy. A county Animal Control officer was called; the cat wascaptured, and the puppy was taken to a veterinary hospital."On Thursday [15 Aug 2013], the cat tested positive for rabies, andthe woman started medical treatment," Smith said. "The puppy isunvaccinated, so it may have to be euthanized."To help slow the spread of the fatal disease and protect arearesidents, 11 veterinarians from the county's 6 veterinary hospitalswill hold special rabies clinics from 26-30 Aug 2013. The clinics willbe held at each of the county's 32 fire departments for a single day.The clinics, sponsored by the Robeson County Veterinary MedicalAssociation in cooperation with several county organizations andinterested individuals, will cost pet owners USD 5.00 for each animalvaccinated, said Dr. David Brooks, a veterinarian from Pembroke. Othersponsors are paying the remaining USD 3.00 that it costs to vaccinateeach animal."We're taking this (rabies vaccine) to the community," Brooks said."But it's up to pet owners to show they are concerned enough about thedangers of rabies to come out and get the vaccinations done."There are several upcoming days where rabies clinics will be held from5:30-7:30 PM. The rabies clinics will be held at the firedepartments.Since November [2012], rabies cases have been reported in Lumberton,Lumber Bridge, Orrum, Parkton, St. Pauls, Red Springs and Rowland. Thevirus is transmitted by infected animals and humans, with symptomsincluding fever, headache, delirium and insomnia. In animals, signsalso include foaming at the mouth, and aggressive or withdrawnbehavior.Although rabies has an incubation period, it is considered fatal oncethe virus reaches the brain.Under state law, all dogs, cats and ferrets older than 4 months mustbe vaccinated for rabies. Local veterinarians are also recommendingthat horses be vaccinated. Those animals that are considered most vulnerable to contractingrabies are raccoons, skunks, foxes, bats, dogs and cats. The Orrum woman is the second to begin treatment for the disease.Smith said earlier this week that another Robeson County woman whothought she might have had contact with a rabid animal began takingthe shots.[Byline: Bob Shiles]--Communicated by:ProMED-mail<[email protected]>[Any time rabies is diagnosed in your area, please be sure your pet'svaccinations are up-to-date.
